Fort of Saint Anthony the Abbot
Bari: following San Nicola and the scent of the sea
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Fortino Sant'Antonio, located in one of the most picturesque spots in the old city of Bari, offers an enchanting view of the sea and the new city, embracing a bend in the ancient walls. Built around 1440 at the behest of the Duke of Bari Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo Orsini, the Fortino originally served as a defensive tower, next to a small church dedicated to Saint Anthony. Reconstructed in the 16th century during the reign of Isabella D'Aragona and Bona Sforza D'Aragona as part of the renovation of the city's defenses, the Fortino underwent remodeling until the 18th century, when the façade on Via Venezia was rebuilt. After demilitarization in 1847 and a long period of neglect, the Fortino underwent restoration from 1994 to 2000. Today it hosts exhibitions, meetings, and debates on the lower floor, while the upper terrace is available for civil weddings.
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE
Located in front of the old port of Bari, it is an iconic testimony to the city's history. It offers a breathtaking view of the ancient medieval walls and the waterfront profile dating back to the first half of the 20th century. Its history goes back as far as 1071, when the Norman Robert Guiscard erected a stone tower to defend the harbor during the siege of Bari. These defensive buildings were often dedicated to saints or thaumaturges to ensure protection, and the Fortino was dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot. The discovery of the remains of an 11th-12th century chapel and church in its walls testifies to its ancient importance.
THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE
Its strategic position on the sea has made it a crucial observation point against potential aggressors over the centuries. Its presence testifies to the importance of coastal defense and the city's determination to protect its territory. In addition, the chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot inside it has great religious and cultural significance. The celebration of the saint's feast day on 17 January each year, with the presence of the wooden statue and the blessing of animals and those suffering from Herpes Zoster, shows the deep devotion and tradition linked to the cult of St. Anthony.
