THE TABERNACLE

Tabernacle of the Stinche

Located at the corner of Via Isole delle Stinche and Via Ghibellina, the Tabernacolo delle Stinche is an authentic historical and artistic treasure of Florence. Built in 1616, it was originally designed to adorn the outer wall of the ancient Florentine prison, known as Le Stinche.

In 1856, architect Luigi Cambray-Digny created the current monumental structure, adding classical elements such as elegant Doric columns and refined friezes. This intervention transformed the tabernacle into a work of unique artistic and cultural value, a testament to Florence's rich history.

Fresco

Painted in 1616, the fresco depicts a touching and symbolic scene: Senator Girolamo Novelli giving a coin to a prisoner through the prison bars.

At the center of the composition stands The Risen Christ, blessing the scene with a solemn gesture. He is accompanied by cherubs holding a scroll with the biblical inscription:

"QVOD VNI EX / MINIMIS ME / IS FECISTIS / MIHI FECIS / TIS"
(What you have done to one of the least of these, you have done to me.)

The artwork also features Saint Leonard, the patron saint of prisoners, and a possible self-portrait of Giovanni da San Giovanni, depicted as a young man with an intense gaze.

Restored multiple times over the centuries, the fresco was returned to the tabernacle after the last conservation intervention in 1995.

THE AUTHOR

Giovanni da San Giovanni (1596 - 1636)

Giovanni Mannozzi, known as Giovanni da San Giovanni, was one of the greatest painters of the Tuscan Baroque. Born in 1596 in San Giovanni Valdarno, he moved to Florence at a young age, where he created extraordinary works that left an indelible mark on art history.

Among his most iconic creations is the fresco of the Tabernacolo delle Stinche, painted in 1616 at the age of just twenty. This work demonstrates his exceptional ability to blend narrative, spirituality, and profound artistic self-reflection.

His mastery in conveying emotions and telling stories through painting established him as one of the most beloved and innovative artists of his time, as well as a key figure in the Florentine artistic scene.

THE STREET

Via Isole delle Stinche, corner Via Ghibellina

The Tabernacle of Stinche is located at the intersection of two significant streets in Florence's historic center, each rich in historical and symbolic meaning:

  • Via Isole delle Stinche, named after the ancient medieval prison, Le Stinche, a site symbolizing the harsh conditions of detention and their memory.
  • Via Ghibellina, one of the main arteries of the historic center, renowned for its history and culture.

The tabernacle's location itself underscores its role as a visual and spiritual reminder, bearing witness to acts of Christian charity and its deep connection to the city's social and religious history.

Location: The Historic Stinche Prison

The Tabernacle of Stinche is set into the wall of a building that once housed Le Stinche, the infamous medieval prison of Florence. This place, a witness to suffering and restriction, now stands as a profound symbol of reflection.

Through its presence, the tabernacle invites passersby to meditate on compassion and Christian mercy, transforming a site of pain into a message of hope and redemption.
