FIUMICINO

an harbour full of history

HISTORICAL NOTES

Fiumicino

The name Fiumicino is derived from the Latin "Flumen Micinum", meaning small river. The small waterway referred to is the docking channel that bisects the city.

Porto

During Roman Empire, under the leadership of Emperor Claudius, the current city of Fiumicino was called Porto and was the maritime outpost on the Tyrrhenian coast.

Avoja

The Roman dialect is famous for its idioms that best summarize the spirit of the great history of the Capital. The expression par excellence is surely "Avoja", which translates various expressions of confirmation!

WHAT TO EAT

Fish

From fried squid to grilled prawns, Fiumicino is first and foremost a seaside town and its seafaring vocation can be felt at the table as well.

Roman Pinsa

The deeds of the Ancient Romans are known by everyone, but few know that already at that time they ate... pizza! To be precise, it is the pinsa, an oval disk of water and flour that was topped with oil and salt.

Supplì

Among the tastiest dishes there are the Supplì, rice and egg balls that hold a stringy surprise: mozzarella cheese! The first written testimony dates back to 1847, when they appear on the menu of a trattoria as "soplis", that is, the Italianization of the French term "surprise".

MUST-SEE

The Oasis

Known for its hexagonal lake, the Oasis surrounds the Port of Trajan, the ancient harbor basin built at the behest of the Emperor in the first century AD. Today the Oasis is a privileged point to admire closely some migratory birds and to immerse oneself in nature and Roman history.

Episcopio di Porto

Not far from Oasi di Porto, there is the imposing village of Episcopio di Porto. The village dates back to the Middle Ages and still preserves the walls, built to defend the coast from the barbarian invasions.

Passoscuro

Enclosed between the green of nature and the blue of the sky and the sea, the small seaside village of Passoscuro collects vibrant murals created by artist Valentina Fabi.
