Leon II

Leon II is the first emperor of the independent abkhazian kingdom. In the second half of 8th century he took advantage of the weakening of Byzantium and, with the help of Khazars (Leon's mother was the daughter of Kahzar Kagan), extended his power to all western Georgia and assumed the title of emperor. The capital of the kingdom was the city of Kutaisi. Leon divided the kingdom into territorial and administrative districts.

Nestor Apollonovich Lakoba

Nestor Apollonovich Lakoba (1893-1936) was an outstanding statesman of Abkhazia. One of the leaders of the Abkhaz Bolsheviks.For a decade and a half he was the most authoritative and indisputable leader of Abkhazia, holding the position of President of the Council of People's Commissars (1922-1930), President of the CEC (1930-1936). A powerful and strong-willed politician.

Ажәҩан мрадоуп, еҵәадоуп Уара уда Аԥсынра!

Litterally "As the sun in the sky, you're still in Abkhazia!", it's a phrase of the Abkhazia national hymn, which is called "Victory" (Аиааира).

Mamalyga (abysta)

Mamalyga (abysta) is cornmeal boiled in water without added salt. Its high content of starch, vitamin B1 and fiber makes it a very healthy food. There are a number of variations: for example, that with soft cream cheese (ayladzh), or with milk and cheese (achamykva).

Adjika Sauce

Adijka sauce is the best-known condiment in traditional cuisine. It is added to almost all dishes, resulting in a distinctive flavor. The basic ingredient is red pepper with the addition of garlic and various herbs. It is known to improve digestion.

Achapa

It's a salad consisting of cooked green beans, cabbage, beets, nettles, sarsaparilla and topped with chopped walnuts, adjika sauce and spices.

Sukhum

Sukhum is the modern capital of Abkhazia, but also one of the oldest cities in the world. Sukhumi's history can be traced to the 6th century BC, when it was settled by Greeks, who named it Dioscurias. During this time and the subsequent Roman period, much of the city disappeared under the Black Sea. In fact, it is located on the coast, surrounded by lush subtropical vegetation: dates and banana palms, cypresses, laurel and mimosas.

New Athos

New Athos is a city with a secular history, one of the most famous tourist resorts of Abkhazia, located in the district of Gudauta, 15 km far from Gudauta and 25 km far from Sukhum. At the end of the 7th century, New Athos was the capital of Abkhazia. In the past it was known by the names of Acheisos, Anacopia, Nikopia, Absara and Psyrtskha. It owes its current name to the homonymous monastery complex built in the nineteenth century.

Lykhny

Lykhny is the largest village in Abkhazia and it is located in Gudauta district, 5 km far from Gudauta. This village has 1500 years of history: it's the old town of Bzyb Abkhazia. In the 19th century, Lykhny was the official residence of the sovereign prince, as well as the capital of Abkhazia.
