PERSONAGES

Antonín Dvořák

He was born in Nelahozeves (a small town in Central Bohemia), composer of world renown. His most famous musical work is the Symphony n. 9 in E minor, op. 95, also called From the new world. Neil Armstrong completed the work on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, the first with a satellite landing, in 1969.

Josef Lada

Painter, illustrator, caricaturist and Czech writer, born in Hrusice (a small town in Central Bohemia) Thanks to his illustrations he has become famous all over the world. He wrote and illustrated the book called The Adventures of Mikeš, the story of a black kitten who could talk. He is known as the illustrator of Hašek's book, The Good Soldier Švejk, which he sketched in over 600 portraits of the main characters.

Go to Prčice!

But go! Go in your pocket!
It is used as the answer to a somewhat silly question, when you want to liquidate someone and don't want to get confused. This idiom refers to a traditional march from Prague to Prčice, which has been organized regularly every May for more than 55 years. The walk is more than 70 km long and goes from Praha-Háje to a small town in the south of Central Bohemia Sedlec-Prčice.

WHAT TO EAT

Vočepák

The Beroun pie is a traditional delicacy from the Beroun area. A large pie, with jam on both sides (usually plum jam), sprinkled with poppy seeds, almonds and raisins. In the past it was part of every banquet at peasant weddings.

Hermelín from Sedlčanský

It's a cheese that has been produced according to the traditional recipe for more than 50 years

Uhlířina from Kladno

Typical miners' food based on potatoes, dumplings, sauerkraut and meat.

Maková hora

(Poppy Mountain)
The place of pilgrimage and sanctuary with a church of St. John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary in the Baroque style. The builder was the Italian Carlo Antonio Canevalle.

Veltrusy Castle

Baroque-style castle, which belonged to the Czech aristocratic family Chotek, attracts the attention of visitors with its particular X-shaped floor plan. There is also a large park with many romantic buildings. The author of the castle is the architect of northern Italian origin Giovanni Battista Alliprandi.

Svatá Hora in Příbram

A beautiful Baroque monastery and Marian pilgrimage site on top of a hill near Příbram. The site is formed by a rectangular complex with four chapels at the corners and inside stands the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its current appearance can be attributed to the architect Carlo Lurago and other important Baroque builders.
