Caravanserai

Sheki: The destination brings history and tourism values together

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Caravanserai

The Caravanserai stands as a historical monument in Sheki, reflecting the heightened importance of trade during the Middle Ages. Typically fortified with a single gate, caravanserais played a crucial role in facilitating trade. In Sheki, the "Caravanserai" historical complex comprises two impressive structures known as the "Yukhary" (Upper) and "Ashaghy" (Lower) Caravanserais, constructed in the 18th–19th centuries AD.

A part of building is now used as a hotel.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE

The "Lower" caravanserai boasts a rectangular shape, featuring a spacious inner courtyard with a central pool. Spanning a total area of 8,000 m2 (86,000 sq ft), its dimensions measure 55 m × 85 m (180 ft × 279 ft). Accessible through four entrances located at the building's corners, the caravanserai comprises 242 rooms.

The "Upper" caravanserai, situated on uneven terrain adjacent to the Gurjan River, adopts a trapezoidal floor plan encompassing a total area of 6,000 m2 (65,000 sq ft). The street-facing front façade stands at a height of 14 m (46 ft), while the inner façade reaches 8 m (26 ft). This section of the caravanserai comprises approximately 300 rooms and storage spaces.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

Centuries ago, wealthy merchants and slave owners found respite in this caravanserai, tethering their camels at stalls and unloading treasures ranging from fine silks and fragrant spices to plush furs. These commodities were stored in cellars beneath their rooms, facilitating trade and travel across two continents, bridging Europe and Asia.

SPECIAL TIPS

"Caravan" means a group of traders, pilgrims or other travellers, engaged in long-distance travel.
