Icherisheher: Preservation and preaching of cultural heritage
Discover the radiant heart of Baku, a place both locals and wanderers affectionately call “Gala” or the “Old City.”
This living museum, Icherisheher, unfolds like an open-air museum across 22 hectares, cradling the treasures of a bygone era.
In December 2000, Icheri Sheher, alongside the iconic Maiden Tower and the opulent Shirvanshahs’ Palace, claimed its spot on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, etching its indelible story into history.
Within this historic haven resides the Icherisheher Centre for Traditional Arts, a vibrant tapestry of Azerbaijani craftsmanship. Immerse yourself in a world where ancient traditions and innovative creativity blend seamlessly, echoing through the cobbled streets. This center, born of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation’s vision, is a cross-continental collaboration with the UK’s Prince’s School of Traditional Arts.
Its mission? To rekindle the flames of traditional Azerbaijani arts and crafts, nurturing the talents of the young and the creative.
Venture inside these ancient walls, and let your curiosity lead you through a captivating journey of discovery.
