HISTORICAL NOTES

Monday begins on Saturday

In the novel "Monday begins on Saturday" by the Strugatsky Brothers (1965), the ISSTEMS (Institute of Scientific and Technological Research for Magic and Witchcraft) is located in Karelia, in the fictional town of Solovets, clearly inspired by the islands and the homonymous monastery.

The first gulag

Marina Goldovskaya's 1988 documentary film The Solovki Regime ("Власть Соловецкая") tells the story of the first gulag in Soviet Russia, built on the island, from its founding in 1923 to the prison's closure in 1939. Includes interviews with former prisoners, including Dmitry Likhachyov , writer Oleg Volkov and longtime Gulag inmate Olga Adamova-Sliozberg (one of four sources named in Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago , the rest were anonymous until 1994).

Кто не рискует, тот не пьет шампанского

The equivalent in english would be "no pain, no gain" or "nothing ventured, nothing gained", literally "if you don't take risks, don't drink champagne."

WHAT TO EAT

Ukha

It is a simple traditional dish, often cooked in a large cauldron directly over a burning fire. Fresh perch is boiled with potatoes, thus obtaining a fish soup. It is often accompanied by a few slices of black bread.

Raspberry Kvass

Kvass (from the Russian "ferment") is a fermented beverage native to Russia and typical throughout Eastern Europe. Kvass is traditionally prepared with vegetables, the most used are beets and cereals, but there are many variations based on vegetables and fruits. Fruit and berries were probably the first foods to be used in fermentation. This kvass is a delicious, healthy, rich in probiotics and pleasantly sparkling drink.

Saami usha

The Saami are the indigenous people of the Russian North, engaged in reindeer herding and fishing. One of the most famous dishes of these people is Saami fish soup. Unlike other ukha soups, the Saami soup is filled with berries - mostly cloudberries and blueberries. It is customary to eat the fish first and then drink the broth.

MUST-SEE

Solovetsky Monastery

For centuries it was the center of Christianization in the region. During the Stalinist era it was turned into a prison camp. In 1992, UNESCO declared the Cultural and Historical Ensemble of the Solovetsky Islands a World Heritage Site. According to UNESCO, the islands represent an outstanding example of a monastic community in an inhospitable environment.

Solovetsky

The village is located at the end of the bay of the same name on the southwestern coast of Bolshoi Solovetsky Island. The central point of the village is the Solovetsky Monastery. The sea and Lake Svyatoye surround the building. From there several paths lead to different parts of the island.

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral

The history of the main temple of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Solovetsky stauropegial monastery has almost six centuries. After 1436 , under the direction of the Monk Zosima, the first wooden Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior with a chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was erected in the center of the Solovetsky Monastery. Under Abbess Philip, the stone Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built. When erecting the temple, the Novgorod architects Salka and Stolypa were guided by the drawings of the holy rector of the monastery.
