Local Delicacies

Swiss fondue, like raclette, is a signature dish of Swiss cuisine. The most delicate Swiss cheese, slowly melted over a gentle flame, creates an experience that embodies Swiss culinary tradition. Immersing yourself in the process of preparing and savoring this cheese delicacy brings you one step closer to understanding the Swiss identity.

Rösti (French: rösti or rœsti) is a Swiss national dish made from grated raw or boiled potatoes with the addition of vegetable or animal fats.

Recipe: Grate the potatoes on a coarse grater. Heat 3-4 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a frying pan. Add the grated potatoes and salt to taste. Fry over medium heat until golden brown, about 6-8 minutes. Then flip and fry on the other side for another 6-8 minutes. Enjoy!

Usually, rösti consists only of potatoes, but sometimes bacon, onion, cheese, apple, or herbs are added, giving the dish unique regional characteristics.

Local Customs, Traditions, and Must-See Events

Some days, such as New Year's Day, Ascension Day, and the National Day on August 1st, are celebrated nationwide in Switzerland. Others, like Good Friday and Easter Monday, are observed in most cantons.

Specific holidays in certain cantons include the Geneva Fast and the Escalade Festival.

The Escalade Festival (Fête de l'Escalade) commemorates the successful defense of Geneva from the Catholic army of the Duke of Savoy in 1602. Costumed processions are held on the weekend around December 11, bringing history to life in the streets of Geneva.
