Messolonghi: The Sacred Town and its Lagoon

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The Lagoon

The lagoon of Messolonghi is the largest lagoon-marine system in Greece. It was created by the convergence of the Acheloos and Evinos rivers, as their sediments slowly transformed the closed basin into a shallow lagoon. It is home to countless winged and aquatic inhabitants and has been designated an Environmental Park. There are vast water surfaces over which about 75% of the total number of bird species in Greece live.
The calm waters of the lagoon are suitable all year round, perfect for tourist kayak trips. As you navigate through the lagoon towards the islet of Saint Sostis-Vassiladi, you may find the lagoon's resident flamingos as your delightful companions.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE

Messolonghi's lagoon stands as Greece's most extensive lagoon-marine system. This natural wonder has earned the status of an Environmental Park and serves as a habitat for a multitude of avian and aquatic species. Over its expansive water surface, more than 200 bird species take flight. The lagoon's tranquil waters offer ideal conditions for year-round kayak excursions, providing an enchanting experience.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

Here, you can seamlessly blend various experiences encompassing sports activities, coastal explorations, photography, and gastronomic delights. On select islands, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a combination of swimming, fishing, and delectable cuisine, with places like Tourlida and Etoliko standing out in this regard. Within the Messolonghi lagoon, you'll encounter the largest salt marshes in the country, with an annual production potential of up to 120,000 tons. The tradition of salt production here dates back to the 14th century and continues to this day, following the same timeless method: seawater is naturally evaporated by the sun and wind, leaving behind salt crystals. The distinctive landscape has left an indelible mark on human activities. Here, you'll find the iconic "pelades," wooden houses built on the water, and navigate the lagoon's surface with "gaites," a local type of boat designed for shallow waters. Notably, the lagoon of Messolonghi is renowned for its therapeutic clay baths, adding another dimension to the array of experiences awaiting visitors.
