Marneuli Municipality

Marneuli, located in eastern Georgia, is part of the Kvemo Kartli region

It borders the municipality of Gardabani to the east, the municipality of Tetritskaro to the north and the municipality of Bolnisi to the west. To the south, Marneuli borders Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Covering 935.2 square metres, the municipality comprises 18 units, linking 79 villages in 16 rural settlements. The area boasts diverse landscapes, including semi-desert areas, mixed forests and mountains where winter lasts for 7-8 months. The climate averages around 12.1 °C.

The population is 136,000, with 48% men and 52% women. The population is predominantly Azeri (83.1%), followed by Georgians (8%), Armenians (7.9%) and 0.6% of other origins.

What to eat

Khachapuri, often hailed as the ‘national dish’ of Georgia, serves as the ideal winter comfort food.

This classic leavened bread takes on a canoe-like form, embracing a delectable filling of molten sulgani cheese baked into its core. To enhance its richness, the khachapuri is adorned with generous chunks of butter, and a cracked egg on top adds the crowning touch. It’s a delightful combination that makes khachapuri a perfect choice to warm up your winter days.

Churchkhela, arguably one of the most visually striking Georgian foods, catches the eye with its colorful, dangling appearance in storefront windows—often leading tourists to mistakenly identify them as sausages. Crafting churchkhela demands both patience and skill: Strands of walnuts are repeatedly coated with concentrated grape juice, a byproduct of the annual wine harvest. Each layer is allowed to dry, creating a chewy, waxy exterior that encases the nuts. Packed with a combination of protein and sugar, churchkhela even played a role in wartime, serving as a reliable source of shelf-stable nutrition for the Georgian military. While they are now more commonly enjoyed at home as part of post-meal treats and coffee sessions, there’s a strong inclination that churchkhela might soon find a place on Georgian restaurants’ boards.

Local customs, tradition and festivities

Marneuloba” is a new event and will be held for the first time in Marneuli. Due to the diverse ethnic composition of Marneuli, this event will support the identification of all ethnic traditions, cuisines, lifestyle, and community identity. We considered it important to bring this matter to the attention of the Municipal Council, and if approved, it will be held annually. We plan to hold the event in the “Growing Again” park area. We consulted with the rural population, and they expressed their readiness to participate in the event. The slogan has also been announced – “Let’s live for Marneuli for a day.”

There will be exhibitions, a musical program, and musical groups will be invited, concluding the event with fireworks.
