What We Love About This Place

The first time I ever took the train was from this station, traveling to Pisa. The following weekend we were planning on going to Cinque Terre, so we wanted a nice and easy trip to figure out the trains. Naturally, with how anxious I get about traveling, we arrived fifty minutes early. This ended up being a good idea because it took an incredibly long time to figure out how to validate our tickets. We ended up figuring everything out, and heading off on our trip. There were many bumps along the way regarding figuring out the train station, but with each trip, we gained confidence. Every trip since then has been smoother, and now the station feels almost familiar. What I love most about it is the sense of possibility. Whether it’s a short journey or a long excursion, Firenze SMN marks the beginning of something new. Standing on the platform, surrounded by the buzz of travelers and trains, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement—each trip an adventure waiting to unfold.

This Place is Important Because

More than just a transit hub, it’s a vital artery that connects Florence to the rest of Italy and beyond. For decades, it has been a gateway for countless journeys—whether for work, study, or pleasure. Commuters rushing through its halls in the early morning light, students with backpacks headed to new cities, and tourists with wide-eyed wonder embarking on their next adventure. This station has witnessed it all. Without this station, Florence would feel more isolated, and the possibilities for movement—whether it’s a quick trip to Pisa or a cross-country expedition—would be far more limited. Santa Maria Novella is the place where stories start, connections are made, and the rhythm of life continues across the rails
