Legvtakhevi, A Hidden Canyon in Heart of Tbilisi

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Tucked away in the heart of Tbilisi, there’s a hidden gem that feels worlds apart from the city’s lively streets. As you step into this peaceful retreat, the noise fades away, and it’s easy to forget you’re still in the middle of the busy old town. Here, you’ll find a Legvtakhevi Canyon with  refreshing waterfall that feels like a cool breath of air, especially on those hot summer days. It’s the perfect spot to take a break from exploring, relax for a moment, and reflect on all you’ve seen, while getting ready for even more adventures to come.

What We Love About This Place

After taking a cable car to Narikala Castle and walking down towards the botanical garden, you will come across a mosque. Take the narrow streets to the right and find the spiral staircase. You’ll find yourself in a canyon, cross the bridge and continue to the right until you reach the waterfall. For a long time, this place was not open to visitors and tourists. But fortunately, when Tbilisi was renovated, this hidden gem was rediscovered. It now feels like a secret oasis.

This Place is Important Because

Legend has it that centuries ago, King Gorgasali was hunting in this very area when his falcon attacked a pheasant. In their struggle, both birds fell into hot, bubbling water that naturally flowed from the ground. The king, astonished by the warm waters, named the place Tbilisi, derived from the Georgian word "tbili", meaning warm. While recent discoveries prove that people lived here long before King Gorgasali’s time, it was his decision to move the capital from Mtskheta to this location.

Special Tips

Legvtakhevi can also be accessed from Abano Street, but I strongly recommend taking the narrow streets from Narikala to get there. The experience of walking through these streets gives you a true sense of how people live in the old town.
