National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Established on February 1, 1888, during the Austro-Hungarian occupation, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the oldest museum in the country. Located in Sarajevo, this magnificent structure was designed by architect Karlo Paržik.

The museum comprises four distinct pavilions connected by terraces, encompassing an inner atrium that houses a botanical garden. This neo-Renaissance masterpiece is unique in Southeast Europe, specifically built to serve as a museum.

The museum’s most prized possession is the renowned Sarajevo Haggadah, a historic Jewish text brought to Sarajevo by Sephardic Jews following their expulsion from Spain.

What We Love About This Place

From November 25, 2023, to March 1, 2024, Sarajevo was illuminated by a stunning Festival of Lights. The event transformed the city's botanical garden into a mesmerizing display of light installations, showcasing Bosnia and Herzegovina's rich cultural and natural heritage.

The Festival not only attracted numerous visitors but also served as a reminder of the significance of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina's holdings. This unique initiative, developed in collaboration with the renowned Sarajevo agency Linden, combined commercial lighting (MK Illumination) with artistic creativity, drawing inspiration from similar events in New York, London, and Berlin.

On February 1, 2024, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrated its 135th anniversary. This historic institution continues to enrich the cultural landscape by creating additional materials for audiences of all ages, focusing on museum publications to complement its permanent exhibitions.
