The Bridge of Peace

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Start your journey through Tbilisi at the iconic Bridge of Peace, a stunning blend of modern design and the city’s ancient charm. Designed by Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, this pedestrian-only bridge gracefully arches over the Mtkvari River, linking the contemporary with the historic heart of Tbilisi. Its sleek, flowing shape of glass and steel makes it a striking example of modern architecture in a city known for its centuries-old traditions.

By day, it’s a beautiful crossing, but at night, the bridge truly comes alive. Thousands of LED lights illuminate its structure, creating a dazzling contrast between the modern bridge and the historic skyline. As you stand there, you’ll feel the pulse of the city, where the past and future meet.

What We Love About This Place

This bridge is my favorite place to start showing my home city to my friends visiting tbilisi. it is a great location to meet up, a have a flavor of a place where one will spend next couple of hours wondering up and down through the narrow streets. the bridge gives access to rike park where gondolas are located that takes ud up on the hill next to the Narikala Castle

This Place is Important Because

In Georgia, peace is not just a word, it's a deeply cherished aspiration. Throughout its long history, this small yet resilient nation has faced countless invasions and battles for survival. From ancient times, Georgia has been attacked by empires and conquerors, each leaving its mark on the country’s history. At any supra a traditional Georgian feast the tamada, or toastmaster, proposes the toast of peace. It’s a moment of reverence, where everyone raises their glass, acknowledging the importance of harmony in a land that has seen too much conflict. This toast has taken on even more significance in recent years, since the 2008 Russian invasion that led to the occupation of 20% of Georgia’s territory. The weight of that loss is still deeply felt, making the wish for peace more urgent and personal. As you stand on the Bridge of Peace, overlooking Tbilisi’s blend of ancient and modern, the significance of this place becomes clear. It's more than just a beautiful structure, it's a symbol of Georgia's enduring hope for peace.

Special Tips

As you enter the bridge, you will be welcomed by many tour agencies offering various attractions. I would recommend the boat trip, which gives you the opportunity to view the city from a different perspective. But you might as well return to it after your walk later in the evening. Therefore, it might be better to take the gondola first in the morning. As mentioned before, during the high tourist season, this place gets very busy, and there is often a queue for the gondola. But there’s a trick I use: get a metro card in advance, load it with enough balance (3 lari for a one-way trip per person), and show the card to the person at the entrance. And you’ve just legally skipped the line!
