BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Tucked away in a beautiful archway, The School of leather is a bustling store and prestigious institution that is focused on the craft of leather working. The aim of this institution is to continue the practice of traditional leather craftsmanship while also allowing visitors to see (and even purchase) the products of the artisans. The school itself offers training from skilled artisans to gain experience with specific techniques. Florence historically is known for its amazing quality of leather, since the Renaissance area, which is still alive and well today in the School of Leather. The bags and leather made in the school are handcrafted and personalized. In order to buy a bag, one must discuss with a craftsman and design the bag. Then, the bag will take a few months to be made and can even be shipped all over the world. Smaller products such as wallets and small bags are available for purchase right away, and a craftsman will even personalize it for you. This institution attracts both artists and visitors from all over the world to come together for the sake of leather craftsmanship.

What We Love About This Place

The School Of Leather stands out because of its historical impact and beauty. The sheer fact that such an old and beautiful building also holds modern talent and art took my breath away. In the United States, I see beauty and art in completely different ways than I have experienced it here in Florence. In my life prior, I had yet to see historical significance alongside current art and beauty. To me, this felt like a museum that was alive and bustling with energy. The ceiling was very ornate, and every piece of leather was perched perfectly in a straight line as you walked through the tight initial hallway. The bags shined with beauty, the talent of the artisans was apparent from my initial viewing of the bags. I was born and raised in California, and I have shopped in what are considered decently famous malls and shopping centers. However, I can say that I have yet to see such beautiful and creative bags in all of my life.

This Place is Important Because

I believe that the school of leather has an immense amount of social significance. On the walls of the school, a short video was played interviewing the school of leather students. The students were all from different cultural backgrounds and places but all came to this school for a common passion. I believe that this creates a social group of artists who are extremely talented but come from many different walks of life. They are hopefully coming together and making social connections. On another level, tourists also come from all over the world in hopes to see their talent and even buy a beautiful bag. The coming together to see this location allows for the appreciation of leather- making to continue and survive in a world of fast fashion.
