The Cherry Tree of SANT’ANTONIO IN POLESINE

Ferrara and Its Hidden Treasures

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

In the courtyard of the Monastery of Saint Anthony in Polesine, between late March and early April, it is possible to contemplate the blooming of the beautiful Japanese cherry tree, which with its pink color inundates this place with additional sacredness.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE

The monastery is located in a secluded area, as one might expect for a place of spiritual retreat. The exterior appearance does not do justice to the magnificence of the interior: walls and ceiling are covered with remarkable frescoes. The environment, consisting of a single square room without dividing columns, enhances the beauty of the decorations.

THIS PLACE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE

The monastery was created to accommodate Beatrice d'Este, who desired to follow the Benedictine rule, and it arose in an area that was once an islet surrounded by marshy lands. The facade, simple and made of terracotta, features a portico. The church is divided into two parts: external and internal.

SPECIAL TIPS

Looking at the church facade, on the right, you'll notice a small doorbell where you need to ring. A kind nun, albeit with a faint voice, greets you and leads you inside the part of the monastery reserved for the nuns. Here, you can admire three wonderful frescoed chapels and a remarkable wooden choir. On the way out, you can freely donate or purchase small items made by the sisters. Every Sunday, Gregorian Chants are performed by the same nuns.
