St Nicholas Orthodox Church

Bari: following San Nicola and the scent of the sea

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The Russian Church of St Nicholas, not to be confused with the Basilica of St Nicholas in whose crypts the saint's relics are kept, is an architectural marvel in the Carrassi district, with an onion-shaped dome shimmering with green ceramic tiles. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II, the foundation stone-laying ceremony took place on 22 May 1913. This date was not chosen by chance. In the Russian calendar, 22 May corresponds to 9 May, the anniversary of the transfer of St Nicholas' relics from Myra to Bari. Although the building was completed after the end of the First World War, in 1937, due to a lack of funds to maintain it in good condition, the church was sold to the Municipality of Bari. This church is the only Orthodox example in Western Europe and reflects the Moscow style, with fine artistic details inside designed by Russian artists. In those years, two temples of St Nicholas were erected - one in St Petersburg and one in Bari, following virtually the same design by the famous architect A.V. Shchusev. The St. Petersburg temple, however, was lost, having been demolished in the 1930s.
