PERSONAGES

Confucius

Confucius was a philosopher who lived in China between the 6th and 5th centuries BC. According to him, the ruler did not govern with the help of force and strict laws, but guided by virtue. Confucius believed that the presence of virtue can make anyone a "superior man": for him the difference between men lay not so much in the diversity of social class or wealth as in the degree of virtue possessed. He went throughout his life in search of a ruler whom he could teach the moral principles essential to rule wisely and unify China.
